[8% increase year-on-year] Honda's Indian subsidiary sells 579,162 units in August! Surpassing Japan's annual two-wheeler market (approx. 360,000 units) in just one month

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has announced its sales results for August 2026. Total sales reached 579,162 units, recording an 8% growth compared to the same month last year.

Both domestic sales and exports exceed the same month last year

According to the sales results for August 2026 announced by Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), total sales reached 579,162 units. This is an 8% increase compared to the 534,861 units sold in the same month last year.

Looking at the breakdown, domestic sales in India reached 517,329 units, an 8% increase from 481,021 units in the same month last year. Additionally, exports reached 61,833 units, showing a 15% growth from 53,840 units in the same month last year.

The company has over 7,000 touchpoints across India and states that it will continue to focus on providing mobility solutions to the market.

Cumulative sales for fiscal year 2026 also record a 13% increase year-on-year

Cumulative sales results from April to August of fiscal year 2026 (FY27) have also been announced. Total sales for this period reached 2,733,758 units, a 13% increase compared to the 2,425,391 units in the same period last year.

The breakdown of cumulative results shows domestic sales at 2,407,304 units, an 11% increase year-on-year, and exports at 326,454 units, a 31% increase. The export sector, in particular, has shown significant growth.

Compared to the Japanese two-wheeler market, one month of sales exceeds annual demand

Since the sales results for two-wheelers in Japan for August 2026 are not yet fully available, we will compare them with the confirmed full-year results for 2025. According to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), the number of domestic two-wheeler registrations and shipments in 2025 was 361,990 units, a 1.6% decrease from the previous year. The breakdown is 107,454 units for Class 1 mopeds, 108,287 units for Class 2 mopeds, 61,990 units for light motorcycles, and 84,259 units for small motorcycles.

In contrast, HMSI's domestic sales in India for August 2026 were 517,329 units, which is approximately 1.4 times Japan's annual total. Including exports, the total sales of 579,162 units is about 1.6 times that amount. When Japan's 2025 results are averaged per month, it comes to about 30,000 units, meaning HMSI's August domestic sales in India are equivalent to about 17 months of the Japanese market.
