Herlings' Dominant Victory on the Deep Sand of Lommel
At the Motocross World Championship (MXGP) Flanders GP held in Lommel, Belgium, Jeffrey Herlings of Honda HRC Petronas delivered a flawless performance throughout the weekend.
On the Lommel circuit, known as one of the toughest deep sand tracks in the world, Herlings dominated by winning the qualifying race, Race 1, and Race 2, leading every lap with an overwhelming display of skill.
In the two final races, he secured the overall victory with significant leads of 45.4 seconds and 39.6 seconds respectively over the second-place riders, building a total margin of 1 minute and 25 seconds.
For Herlings, riding the factory CRF450RW, this marked his eighth overall victory of the season. With five races remaining (a maximum of 300 points available), he has extended his lead over the second-ranked rider to 104 points, firmly taking control of the championship.
His teammate, Tom Vialle, battled tenaciously against experienced sand specialists in the 450cc class, securing fourth overall with results of 5th and 3rd place. Although narrowly missing the overall podium by just 2 points, he delivered a superb performance under challenging conditions.
Ruben Fernandez, who had previously struggled at this track, completed the weekend without major mistakes, finishing sixth overall with 7th and 6th place finishes.
Meanwhile, in the MX2 class, Valerio Lata struggled with the deep sand conditions, finishing 9th and 11th. The next round will be held in Uddevalla, Sweden, from August 15th to 16th. The track is characterized by its rocky, hard-pack surface, and further strong performances are expected from the riders.
Comments from Herlings and Team Members
Jeffrey Herlings, who achieved the perfect victory, commented: "It was another perfect weekend. Leading every lap in all the races made the racing quite easy, allowing me to control the pace and choose the lines I wanted. I really love this track, and I think it showed how comfortable I was. Thanks to the hard work of the entire team, we've reached a level where we can win both races by about 40 seconds. I have a 104-point lead, but the job isn't finished yet."
Tom Vialle, who finished fourth overall, shared his thoughts: "Although I was just a few points short of the podium, I'm very satisfied considering I'm back here on a 450cc machine. It's truly the toughest track in the world, and I haven't practiced in these conditions much in recent years. Finishing fourth overall and third in Race 2 is a great result."
Ruben Fernandez, sixth overall, looked ahead: "Sixth overall isn't a bad result. I didn't quite reach the podium battle, but I'm proud that I didn't crash once throughout the weekend. I was able to show speed and consistency even on such a difficult track. I'm looking forward to the upcoming races, which suit me well."
Team Manager Marcus Pereira de Freitas summarized: "This track is always extremely tough, and the high temperatures this time made it even more challenging. Nevertheless, Jeffrey showed overwhelming performance, and Tom also delivered a great ride to finish fourth overall. Ruben also showed significant growth and rode with more composure than before. It was a very successful weekend for the entire team."
