Yamaha Vietnam has released information on the causes of motorcycle engines failing to start and effective solutions. From battery and spark plug issues to specific points to note for FI (Fuel Injection) vehicles, they are calling for the importance of daily maintenance.
Typical causes and solutions such as batteries and spark plugs
Yamaha Vietnam lists six key points as the main reasons why a motorcycle's starter motor won't turn or the engine won't start. One typical cause is a weak or dead battery. This occurs due to long periods of inactivity or repeated short-distance riding, with symptoms such as a weak response when pressing the starter button or a faint horn sound. In modern scooters, the meter panel may blink or turn off completely when attempting to start. In this case, charging or replacing the battery with a new one is necessary.
Additionally, if the spark plug has thick carbon deposits or is wet, the engine will not start. If the engine starts for only a few seconds and then stops, accompanied by a strong smell of gasoline, a spark plug issue is suspected. It is recommended to remove the plug and clean the electrode dirt with a cloth, or replace it with a new one if it is excessively worn.
Furthermore, failures in the starting system, such as the starter motor, relay, or switch, can also be causes. If you press the starter button and only hear a "clicking" sound from under the seat without the engine turning, there may be a problem with the starter relay. As an emergency measure, you can lightly tap the starter motor to make the stuck brushes contact, but subsequent inspection at a professional repair center is essential.
Specific points for FI vehicles and daily preventive measures
Troubles in the fuel supply system or electronic control system can also be factors that prevent the engine from starting. In addition to clogged fuel filters or pump failures, the presence of moisture or impurities in the gasoline can also hinder combustion. In FI (Electronic Fuel Injection) vehicles, abnormalities in the side stand sensor or tilt sensor may cause the ECU to automatically cut off the starting system. If the engine warning light on the meter blinks or stays on, it is recommended to check for wire breakage caused by rodents or dirt around the sensors, and to have the error code read at a dealer.
The article also warns against incorrect user habits. Pressing the starter button before the FI lamp turns off after turning the key on prevents the fuel injection system from being ready, which causes starting failure. Also, if the remaining gasoline is too low, the fuel pump cannot be cooled, leading to failure, so it is desirable to always keep at least 1/4 of the tank full.
To prevent trouble, in addition to regular maintenance, it is important not to crank the starter too continuously when the engine does not start. If it does not start after 1 or 2 presses, waiting about 10 seconds before trying again can prevent battery depletion and starter motor overheating. Preventive measures such as storing the bike on the center stand when not riding for a long period are also effective, and in case of trouble, it is recommended to consult an authorized dealer rather than forcing the engine to start.
