A Journey Through Time from Z1 to Modern Classic: Kawasaki Z650RS Custom by ACTIVE

ACTIVE's Z650RS

In 2022, Kawasaki released the Z650RS to the market. It is a lightweight neo-classic model that incorporates the light and simple impression of the Kawasaki RS = Roadster, also found in the Z900RS, while utilizing the platform of the Z650, including its parallel two-cylinder engine and tubular steel trellis frame. Similar to the relationship between the Z1 and Z900RS, the Z650RS has a model that can be considered a motif, and that is the Z650 1976. In the 1970s, the Z650 emerged as the third 4-cylinder sports bike following the 903cc Z1 and the 750cc Z2. Its agility, unique to the middle class, was well accepted on the market, and it gained popularity with the coined term "Zapper," meaning cutting through the wind. The Z650RS can be seen as projecting the image of the Zapper into a modern parallel-twin model. ACTIVE has developed various parts with the concept of the "modern version of the Zapper with a café racer spec" and showcased this Z650RS with these parts at the 2023 Tokyo Motorcycle Show. The bike features low-positioned clip-on handlebars, which are standard in the café racer style. The potential discomfort in the position, which often occurs when converting models with raised handlebars to clip-ons, has been addressed by engineering the handlebars, including the top bridge. As a product, it is an all-in-one kit that eliminates the hassle of installation by also including front brake hoses, clutch wires, and throttle cables that require length adjustments.

The rear sets were developed simultaneously with the handlebar kit, ensuring a perfect match in position. Slim and large-diameter 18-inch GALE SPEED wheels replace the stock 17-inch wheels both in the front and rear, expressing the generous yet nimble ride quality of the original Zapper Z650. The 6-spoke TYPE-N design was selected to accentuate a neo-classic feel, complementing the size. Furthermore, there are additional enhancements such as the Hyperpro Street Box (a set of front fork springs and rear shock) and GALE SPEED Billet Front 4P Axial Caliper for the front and rear, improving the feel and effectiveness while aligning with this distinctive style. The GALE SPEED VRD Master Cylinder 'Dark Edition,' highlighting the beauty of surface and texture, along with the Wire Clutch Holder Kit 'Dark Edition,' contribute to elevating the modern neo-classic elements beyond mere dimensions and functionality. Additionally, the Top Bridge & Clip-On Handlebar Kit and Rear Sets Kit are introduced under the new brand '153 Garage' by ACTIVE. ACTIVE's goal is to 'incorporate the style of neo-classic models into designs without being limited to functional beauty, and create products based on free ideas'. The new parts are rooted in the clear concept of a "modern version of the Zapper with a café racer spec." Naturally, the position and functions of each part aim to enhance the riding experience, mirroring the approach taken with other ACTIVE parts. Moreover, it draws attention to its role as a demo bike, creating anticipation as a comprehensive package.

Handle

The beautifully crafted top bridge, engraved with the brand name "153GARAGE," is part of the "153GARAGE Top Bridge & Clip-on Handlebar Kit." The kit includes a clutch wire, throttle cable, and front brake hose, all tailored to the required length for installation and designed to complement the clip-on handlebars, resulting in a more spacious and comfortable riding position. At the top of the fork, you can find the Hyper Pro Preload Adjuster.

The front master is the GALE SPEED VRD Dark Edition. Unlike the fully machined 3D GALE SPEED Elaborate Series, it intentionally minimizes the machining, focusing on the beauty of forged surfaces and textures. After shot peening, the body is finished with black hard anodizing. The clutch holder is a GALE SPEED Wire Clutch Holder Kit Dark Edition to match it. This Dark Edition has recently been released on the market.

Chassis

The front and rear wheels, which have been changed from the stock 3.50-17/4.50-17 size to 2.75-18/4.00-18 size, are GALE SPEED TYPE-N, made of forged aluminum. These are also commercially available for the Z650RS. The φ41mm front fork is equipped with Hyperpro springs. The brake calipers, featuring a flat design that blends with the overall design of the bike, are the GALE SPEED Billet Front 4P Axial Calipers in black, which have also recently been made available for sale.

The rear brake caliper has also been replaced with the recently released GALE SPEED Billet Rear 2P Axial Caliper. The ACTIVE Rear Axial Caliper support with 84mm pitch is compatible with the Z650RS.

The rear shock has been changed to the Hyperpro Rear Shock Emulsion Type. It can be purchased individually or as a set with front springs in the Hyperpro Street BOX.
