Yamaha Vietnam has released information explaining the role of motorcycle Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) and how to verify them accurately. In addition to checking the vehicle body and registration documents, the information also covers how to perform online inquiries and the penalties for tampering.
The meaning of the 17-digit VIN and the difference from the engine number
Yamaha Vietnam has released a detailed explanation regarding motorcycle Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN). Understanding the VIN is essential when performing license plate registration procedures, ownership transfers, or when carrying out repairs and replacing related parts. It consists of 17 alphanumeric characters based on ISO standards and serves as important information for identifying the vehicle's origin and manufacturing location. The breakdown is as follows.
- First character: Represents the continent.
- First 2 characters: Represent the country.
- 2nd and 3rd characters: Indicate the manufacturer.
- 4th to 8th characters: Represent model-specific information (standard product model).
- 9th digit: Represents the check digit (accuracy of the VIN).
- 10th character: Indicates the manufacturing year.
- 11th character: Represents the assembly plant.
- 12th to 17th characters: Represent the frame serial number.
It also explains the difference between the VIN and the engine number. While the VIN indicates manufacturing information for the entire vehicle, the engine number is stamped on the engine itself and provides information necessary for planning proper maintenance and parts replacement, such as engine type and operating parameters.
Three verification methods and how to handle unreadable numbers
Three methods were introduced for checking the VIN. The first is direct verification on the vehicle body, where it is stamped on the frame such as under the seat, on the steering neck, or inside the trunk.
The second is verification via the vehicle registration document, referring to information recorded during official registration procedures. The third is an online inquiry, which can be accessed by visiting the official website of the Vietnam Register (app.vr.org.vn/ptpublic) and entering the registered license plate and verification code to display it on the screen.
If the VIN is difficult to read due to rust or aging, they recommend placing a piece of white paper over it and rubbing it with a pencil. If it still cannot be confirmed, they urge owners to take the vehicle to a professional institution such as an authorized Yamaha dealer. Note that unauthorized tampering, cutting, or welding of the VIN is subject to vehicle confiscation under Vietnamese government decrees.
The company states that checking the VIN when purchasing a used vehicle allows one to understand the quality and origin of the vehicle.
