V-Strom 800 (800cc) Owner: Oteru-san

Suzuki's "V-Strom" series is highly acclaimed worldwide as an adventure model that balances on-road comfort with off-road capability. Among them, the "V-Strom 800" is an ambitious model equipped with a newly designed parallel-twin engine, achieving nimble handling and strong torque characteristics distinct from the traditional V-twin models.

It strikes a high-level balance of elements demanded by modern adventure bikes, such as excellent riding mode selection via electronic control systems and an ergonomic riding position for comfortable long-distance touring. Its versatility, which emphasizes on-road touring performance while also being capable on unpaved roads, continues to attract many riders.

Oteru-san, whom we are featuring today, chose this model as a replacement for their previous V-Strom 650XT. As an owner who understands the merits of the V-Strom series they've been familiar with for years, they seem to be fully experiencing the advancements in the new engine and chassis. With this motorcycle, which balances ease of handling with long-distance comfort, they are likely to continue enjoying a fulfilling motorcycle life.

■ Reason for Purchase, Usage, and Comparison Models

Switched from a V-Strom 650XT. Purchased it because the brakes and suspension seemed good. While the design might be a matter of taste, I was drawn to the gray metallic color.

■ Strengths

The engine was better than I expected. While you can feel the pulses, it feels like the vibrations are well-suppressed. Perhaps the V-Strom 650's engine was too gentle (which is also its charm), but I can feel the difference in power in the low to mid-range. In A-mode, it felt similar to the B-mode of my previous XSR900 (limited to low to mid-range). The bike feels a size smaller and is easier to handle.

■ Weaknesses

Perhaps because the screen is lower than the V-Strom 650's, the wind that used to hit my forehead now hits from my nose upwards. If you're tall and ride on highways often, a taller screen might be better. However, the screen on this model is superior in terms of side wind and around the shrouds.

■ Advice for Potential Buyers

It's a truly easy-to-ride motorcycle and is recommended for its comfort on long rides. I don't know about the fuel economy yet as I haven't ridden many miles, but it might be difficult to exceed the V-Strom 650's fuel economy (the standard 800 is clearly more on-road oriented and fun, so I tend to rev it more). Currently, I'm getting about 25 km/liter on local roads.
